Assigning Loans using Kivatools

Assigning loans to yourself for tagging using Kivatools

ThNOTES below give extra guidance to help avoid some of the pitfalls that have been noted by other taggers.

Please familiarise yourself with tagging definitions before you begin tagging. You will find them here - http://kivaloantaggers.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/tag-definitions.html

New taggers Q&A is here http://kivaloantaggers.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/q-for-new-taggers.html

1) Log in

NOTE: Please ensure you are logged into the main Kiva site before you start tagging on Kivatools because if you aren't, the "add tags" area will not be visible when you open loans to tag them.

The loan assignment site can be accessed via your personal Kivatools login link. Please save and bookmark your link for easy access. If you lose your link, the Captains of the Loan Tagger team can send it to you again; please post your request on the team board. Please do not share your personal link. If you are using a public computer, be sure to logout and delete the browsing history after you are done.

2) "Loans for Tagging" Summary page

After entering your link, you will see the Loans or Tagging page of the Kivatools website. In the top right-hand corner you see your lender ID and a logout button.  (hellenjc is used as an example)

Below that you see links for all assigned, all unassigned or all untagged loans. A loan may have tags that any Kiva lender has applied to it, but still needs to be reviewed by a loan tagger for completeness. The count highlighted in the picture below is a snapshot on how the team is doing. ( It's rare that it's as low as the example I'm showing below!)

On an average day, up to 400 loans are posted on Kiva, and historically, the team tags them within 48 hours. However, sometimes considerably more loans are posted. In order to keep the up with the high volume, the team depends on all taggers keeping an eye on the numbers and doing their share of the tagging.  Having 200-400 untagged loans is a good state of affairs.

Below this you will see a list of taggers and you will see your name in this list (you can see mine below). As you assign loans to yourself, the number of loans beside your name will increase.
NOTE: -  Don't be alarmed when you see the number of loans going down again, this is because, as the loans get funded, they fall off the list.
NOTE:- The number of unassigned loans may different from the number of un-tagged loans. This is because some taggers may not tag their assigned loans immediately; also, the database updates every 15 minutes, so there may be a time lag between tagging and database update.

Please note screens/functions may appear on your device somewhat differently than those below, depending upon the browser you are using.

3) Assigning a list to yourself to tag

At the bottom of the "Loans for Tagging" page you will see a search facility -  This is where you find loans that you wish to tag.

The "sort by" default is for Expiration Date / Ascending, which shows a list of loans by expiration date.
NOTE: If there are a lot of unassigned loans (i.e over 300),  please use this sort first so that those expiring soonest will be tagged first.

If there fewer unassigned loans (i.e under 300) you might like to sort by Amount left / Descending instead. (highlighted in green below).

This will sort loans by size (highlighted in Purple below). Select the largest ones first as they will need the most help with getting funded. In this case Nabil's loan had $5000 left on their loan.

4)  Creating a custom search

You can select any combination of countries, partners, sectors and activities. The search works as "AND". For example, if you select "Burundi" and "Construction" (marked green below), you will get a list of only construction loans from Burundi.

If you want to select two (or more) different countries at once, click on the first one, then hold the CTRL key while clicking on the others.

5) Selecting loans from your search and assigning them to yourself for tagging

From the list you created as a result of your search, you can either check individual loans you want to tag (outlined in red below), or use the left-hand drop down to select 10, 20, 30, 50, 75 or 100 loans at once (outlined in green below).

It is recommended that you assign 10 loans at a time to yourself as most taggers find this easiest to manage.

Once you are happy with your selection, click "Assign selected loans to me" (outlined in purple below).

You will now see a confirmation pop up showing you the number of loans you have selected and asking you to confirm the assignment. Hit "OK".

You will see a confirmation pop up indicating how many loans have been assigned to you.

NOTE: You may see a little checkbox saying "prevent this page from creating additional dialogue" rather than the successfully assigned box as above. This is a functionality of the browser. If you are using Firefox, if you check the box, Firefox will disable the "assign loans" button. You may see different warnings and text in different browsers. DO NOT check any of these boxes. Just click on OK.

6) Tagging the loans you have assigned to yourself

After you assign loans to yourself, they are still visible in your search result window, but now they are greyed out, and you cannot undo the assignment.

NOTE: Assigned loans that are not tagged after 48 hours will go back into the "loans available for tagging" list for reassignment.

You will see a "Mark as Taggable Or Untaggable" column. If you find a loan that you are unable to attribute any tags to, please click the untaggable button. This will stop the loan from going back to the "loans available for tagging" list  and the button will change to taggable; with the word untaggable in small red letters now visible underneath the borrower's name. (see below)
If you make a mistake, just click the button again and it will change the button back to "Untaggable" again (which will also remove the little red untaggable word).

NOTE:  The untaggable buttons are available both on this page for those who wish to tag from this page (more on that below) and on the next "Assigned Loans" page.

Once you have assigned loans to yourself, there are several different ways to access your loans for tagging.

METHOD 1

NOTE:   This is probably the most user-friendly method, and it's recommended to use this method; only move on to one of the other methods if you don't get on with this one.

Now click on "Go to assigned Loans Page"

This will open a new tab/page and you will see the loans you have selected at the top of the list of loans.. As mentioned above "A loan may have tags that any Kiva lender has applied to it, but it still needs to be reviewed by a loan tagger for completeness."

It may also have user_favourite, when a lender has starred it, or likewise volunteer_pick or volunteer_like. These can be ignored.

If, as advised, you selected the "first 10" from the drop down menu as suggested in point 5 above then there will be 10 untagged ( by you) loans.

Now click on "Select first 10" ( see below) and these 10 loans will now have a " tick " in the box beside the loan's name.

Now click on "Open Selected (First 10) and the "ticked" loans will open, in Kiva, across the top of your browser each in it's own tab ready for you to tag.

NOTE: On each loan the  Add Tags section is below the description and above the map

NOTE: During the course of your tagging if you come across any loans that you cannot attribute any tags to, please go back to the "assigned loans" page and click the untaggable button as described above.

On the assigned loans page you may see the word "null" (see below) instead of Untaggable. This is a known error but if you click on it the word will still change to taggable and red untaggable next to the lender's name will still appear.

NOTE: If you choose a number of loans less than 10 on the "Loans for Tagging" page (let's say you chose 5) and clicked on "Go to assigned loans page" you will see the 5 untagged (by you) loans. You will now need to put a tick in the box beside each of these loans  (rather than using "select first 10" button. However you can still use the "Open selected (first 10) button and it will open your 5 (or whatever number under 10) loans in separate tabs for you ready to tag.

NOTE : When you open ten loans at the same time in Kiva (using the "Open Selected (first 10)" button), you might see some loan pages showing you as logged out. You can simply refresh those pages, no need to close the pages and open them again. Once you refresh the page, you should see that you are still logged in. If this does not happen just log in on that loan page and then press the back button on your browser until you get back to the loan you were wanting to tag.

METHOD 2

On the "Loans for tagging page"

From the list you created as a result of your search, you can either check individual loans you want to tag (outlined in red below), or use the left-hand drop down to select 10, 20, 30, 50, 75 or 100 loans at once (outlined in green below).

Once you are happy with your selection, click "Assign selected loans to me" (outlined in purple below).

After you assign loans to yourself, no other tagger can access them through this tool. They are still visible in your search result window, but now the ticks are greyed out .

You can now click on the borrower name and a new tab will open with the loan for you to tag.

NOTE: During the course of your tagging if you come across any loans that you cannot attribute any tags to, please go back to the "assigned loans" page and click the untaggable button as described above (outlined in blue in the screenshot above).

NOTE of CAUTION: This view resets if you start a new search or refresh the page in any way. The loans assigned to you will thus disappear from this view, and you will have to use one of the other ways described above and below to access them again.

METHOD 3

Assign loans to yourself

Near the top of the "Loans for Tagging" page you will see a link to your personal loan list. Click on "download" to download an Excel file. This file contains all loans assigned to you that are still fundraising (not just the ones you just assigned to yourself most recently).

The spreadsheet will have the loans you assigned to yourself most recently at the top.

You can now use the link in the third column (C Raw link) or fourth column from the left (D Loan link) in the excel sheet for the loan link. It does not look like a hyperlink, but is one; just click on the cell and a new window will open with the loan.

*************************************************************************

NOTE:  When you use your individual login to access Kiva tools you may see the error message below. This is most likely because Kivatools is refreshing its information which it does every 15 minutes. If this happens, just wait for a few minutes and try again. You should now have access.

FINAL NOTE:
If you are having any difficulties, or want to ask questions about any of this, please post on the message board and either a captain or a more experienced team member will help you.

Thanks for giving your time to help lenders find the loans they want to support. :-)
